The last 24 hours of work have been pretty remarkable and to let them pass without embalming them in the blog would be a shame....

As an intro, this month I am doing Gynecology during the day and every 5th night I am in the hospital on call to deliver babies. I also work in our own clinic twice a week, so quite a variation.

Here is the rundown

1 ectopic (tubal) pregnancy that had to be removed in the OR ( I did nothing)

1 C-Section ( I did nothing) but the really remarkable thing here is that the baby weighed 10 lbs and 9 oz, roughly Isabellas 5 week old weight, and she is not a small baby. This guy looked like a giant! The reason for the C-section was macrosomia (large baby) and it seemed pretty wise by the OB that called it - the pt's previously 2 children were premature at 4 pounds and 5 pounds

1 vaginal delivery - ( I didn't do much here either) paged at 3:50 AM, got to the floor by 3:55, baby delivered at 3:57 as I am putting on the gown. The mother had used cocaine earlier in the evening and went into labor. As I was delivering the placenta she kicked me in the chest - first time that has happened. Thank the Lord she didn't have tears or complications because the attending doctor didn't show up for a while, and he didn't seem to particularly care about a 30 year old having her 6th baby. She had not seen a doctor for the entire pregnancy. The only good thing in the world about cocaine is that it causes your blood vessels to constrict and that means that her bleeding was very minimal.

1 seven year-old girl- the sweet little girl was getting ready for school and putting on her favorite dress for her Easter pictures. As she sat on her bed pulling the dress over her head she toppled about 2 feet onto a tile floor falling on her outstretched wrist. In the office she was all prettied up but holding her L arm close to her body. On x-ray there was a fracture of the humerus (arm bone between shoulder and elbow) which is actually quite bad. She had to see an orthopedic doctor right away.

2,000 Miles

The good old (still relatively new) Vento motorscooter turned over 2,000 miles this weekend. Four miles to work each way - add it up and it is alot of trips to the hospital.
It seems like just yesterday that I bought it on Ebay. It continues to be continued enjoyment with only minimal safety hazards.

Our friends Steve and Mary Anne are coming to join our residency and they are in a similar situation as us - moving from Philly, poor, want scooter - so I am excited to be encouraging a friend to get a scooter.

Here are my two beautiful babies!! Rocco loves Isabella so much and it is so cute. She has started looking at him and smiling when he is close.

This is her favorite time of day--after mommy or daddy changes her and puts her on the bed to play and talk with her. She is talking back and loves to smile and laugh at us. She is now 6 weeks old and as matt said in the last entry--she is doing great!

Diversity

True to the name of this blog - life changes II -it really is amazing how a baby changes your life.

On Saturday we went with friends to an outlet mall we we walked around with our babies in strollers. We had a great time - Isabella had a good day and that means we were happy.... when baby is happy, we are happy. When baby sleeps, we are happy and we sleep. When baby eats well, we are happy.

We really can't complain - Isabella has been doing very well during the night. We only wake up once usually. She knows when it is night time and we are very thankful to God for that.

To continue on the subject of diversity, I did something for the first time recently....

I planted flowers! My dad and I had worked on a flower bed recently and on his last visit he planted some flowers. I added some recently and I enjoyed it so much that I don't know hot to put it into words. In fact, if you think I am silly then you probably have never planted flowers. And if you have then you probably share some of my feelings...

here is a picture of my flower bed in our yard.... again, I am amazed myself that this is actually what I am writing about, but what can you do - rule number 3 of blogging is that you are supposed to be honest - so I figured I shouldn't break them all.

And here is one more picture that I think is exceptional - this flower is called a lantana - it is a woody bush with lots of these flowers. It is amazing how many colors are in each one.

REGRETS

I really am sorry about how infrequently we have been updating the blog - we have violated the numero uno rule of blogging. The rule states that if you don't update your blog then your blog will be considered stinky. Whatever few people were reading this before - there are probably less now.....

I am also about violate rule number 2 - this rule states that multiple blogs entries made around the same period time are considered an invalid compensation for breaking rule number 1......

Another weak compensation will be to show more pictures, although from what katie tells me people really want to see pictures and not actually read the odd conglomeration of things that I write.

Hello!

1 month!!

Look how cute they are!! Rocco has been really sweet with her the last couple of days..it makes mommy very happy.

wow!! it has been a month already since little Isabella came into our world. She is doing very well. we went to the doctors on Friday and she gained two pounds and has grown an inch!! we are happy that she is a good little eater. She continues to do well at night and we are praying that she is sleeping through the night in a month or so. I look forward to that--if God allows.
I am more tired today because we lost that hour for daylight savings time. Geezzz...like i need any more reasons not to get enough sleep.

We are now also with any grandparents. Matt's parents left on Thursday...it was nice have two full weeks of help. We are nervous but excited about having our place back to ourselves and learning what this parenting thing is all about. We look forward to the next time when we see all of them again. well, here are some more new pictures of her--ENJOY!!

HERE WE GO PIRATES HERE WE GO!!

Baseball season is soon upon us. For those of you reading affiliated with the Pittsburgh Pirates or western PA you know it has been a rough number of years for us.

It is true, our BUCS have struggled. But I think I have the solution.

My parents are visiting and have brought a Pittsburgh Post Gazette, on the last page of the sports section there is a picture with this caption

"Yoslan Herrera pitched two perfect innings in the Pirates 8-1 rout of Manatee Community College yesterday at McKechnie Field in Bradenton, Fla."

That is the answer! We need to play more colleges and minor league teams! That will surely boost our record and our moral.

If that doesn't work out then we can settle again for a mediocre team with a really great stadium.
