Spider Man

Taking advantage of a visiting friend, katie and I were able to get away to the dollar theater - we saw Spider Man 3. In my opinion, the Spider Man movies have been the best comic book action-hero movies, and here is a short treatise on why.....

1. Spider Man is a lot more like you than any other superhero
2. The costumes, womenly screams in distress, and action antics are just corny enough that you are reminded, that indeed these movies, are based on comic books
3. Based in NYC, not Gothem City or Metropolis
4. Relationships in the story - Peter and MJ, Peter and his Aunt, Peter and his best friend Harry (see number 5)
5. The first bad guy to appear - this is harry, peter's best friend who is avenging his Dad's death. Harry's silly costume involves this flying hoverboeard/snowboard that is just awesome
6. The first bad guy to appear (Harry) actually ends up helping Peter (Spiderman) against the next bad guy (the sand man, played by Thomas Hayden Church - see number 7)
7. Thomas Hayden Church - he has come a long way from playing Lowell Mather, on Wings

So, in the end the movie comes to a culmination when Peter forgives the man who killed his uncle - this was pretty important, but then the movie ends with the humanistic hurray that emphasis that you have to be a good person. This seems good, but only seems to be half true.......

Just cute

Here are some recently taken pictures of Isabella. The first one is of her and daddy playing with her favorite toy "Mr. Froggie". And the next one is of her getting ready to get in the bath; she loves her bath time.

First Beach Trip

We went to the island last night with with Isabella for the first time. It was a lot of fun to just walk up and down the beach with her. The SMI team was there for their debrief time and we wanted to join their night time talk because one of our friends from Philadelphia was in town to do this talk. It was a treat to see him for a little while. Here are two pictures of Matt and Isabella (we ran out of memory on our card). This one is the good one of the water --too bad matt's eyes are closed.

Eating with a spoon

Isabella has eaten with a spoon for the first time. She did really well with it--i was very pleasantly surprised by this. She didn't seem to like it all a lot, but she tolerated it. Here are some pictures from the fun experience. Things are gunna be changing here very quickly.

Planet Earth

There is a series out by the BBC called "Planet Earth" and it is awesome. They have some very

awe inspiring footage of nature and landscapes. I would highly, highly recommend that anyone watch it - we got it from Netflix, but you could also rent it part by part at any video store.

Swimming monkeys, 6 foot salamanders, grizzly bears, leopards (claimed to be the first video shoot of snow leopards from the himalayas), great white sharks ravenously eating unsuspecting seals, it is all there...... in all seriousness, this is the most compelling nature footage in one series that I have ever seen. Apparently it took multiple years and over 25 million dollars to shoot.

It definitely makes me worship God as creator of all living things

getting bigger

We have had a very exciting couple of days. We have all spent more time with SMI students and we had our friends that were here with us two years ago over for dinner on Friday. It was nice to just hang out with them and see how they are doing.
Isabella is getting so big! I have recently noticed how big she is getting when I put her in the bassenet (it has been a long time). Here are some pictures of her. I love the one where she is sitting in her Bumbo. How cute is that??
She is interacting so much now. She loves to watch people when we are in bigger crowds and to be outside looking around at what God has made. She is just lovin life!

New Hot Dog Champion!

I am starting to gain more of an appreciation for our freedom and the significance of July 4th. This year I have learned a little bit about American history, particularly the Vietnam War and the invasion of Grenada. These controversial parts of history deal with freedom, oppression and how to appropriately help your neighbor. This has caused me to reflect....
But now my time for reflection is over, and it is on to what is actually my favorite part of July 4th - the Nathans' Hot Dog Eating Competition at Coney Island. This year is particularly special because in the competitive eating world there is a new kid on the block, his name is Joey Chestnut.
Kobayashi has been the Hot Dog eating champion six years running, regularly crusing his opponents, including William "The Refrigerator" Perry. There has been some controversy - claims of muscle relaxants being used to expand the stomache as one example. This year the defending champ has come in with one the most difficult injuries to overcome in the sport, an arthritic jaw. It was rumored he may skip the contest altogether. But he showed up....
And Joey Chestnut has now bested him, 66 hot dogs to Kobayashi's 63. And America rejoices as we reclaim what should be rightfully ours - boasting about how much we can eat!

BACK IN OB LAND

Well, I have started my second year..... back to another rotation of obstetrics. It has been busy. I have been able to take part in 7 deliveries in the first two days. Thankfully, none of them completely by myself - the idea of delivering by yourself is exciting, unless something goes wrong then you kind of wonder about which doctor is actually liable in the lawsuit.

So I was preparing to deliver a baby, the 6th to this particular patient. Should be no problem. At my side, the charge Nurse, the battle ax of OB land, and the nurse to which we bow down more than any other. She asked "Dr. Moslener, should we page Dr. Cantu? He is in the OR and told us to only page him if necessary. " I reassured her - and then promptly went on to ask her if I was using the suctioning equipment correctly - which she responded to by rolling her eyes and saying again, "Dr. Moslener, should we page Dr. Cantu? "

Well, the attending came, which was good. The delivery was a little bit complicated, but good in the end.

Overall, a great first 2 days (2 lb baby, 11 lb baby, circumcision, twins). I am already tired, thankfully tomorrow is a holiday

Graduation

This post is a little late, but I am hoping that it really too late. Two weeks ago was our programs graduation. The speaker was not able to make it in because of bad weather in Texas, so our program director gave the speech instead. It was actually really nice because it was a little bit more personable and Dr. Leibert is a hoot--so it was entertaining as well. It was a little sad to say good-bye to people and at church the next morning . All 5 of the third years go to our church, so there were a lot of tears. Isabella was the hit graduation night as well--she looked really cute in her halter dress (thanks, Gran) .
All of the SMI students were there as well. This is the group that we came down here with two years ago. There are two couples who are very interested in coming down here next year. we are real excited about this because they are both really nice and seem that they would be perfect for the program. Here is a group shot of all of them. There 8 students that came back this year that were with us in 05' and we are so excited to have them back. we're going to have them over at some point for a dinner reunion.
