tummy time & a new toy

well..it has been a while since i have written on the blog; i am sorry about that. Things are going well around here. It is getting H-O-T in Texas!! matt is about done with his crazy month; i have felt like a single-mother a lot of the month so i am happy that it is almost over.

This is a picture of Isabella on her tummy..she doesn't like to be on her tummy for too long, but i am trying to do it more.

I just got her an excersaucer last week and she is enjoying it now for short periods of time. the more i put her in the more she likes it though. (Rocco likes it too)

Mystery solved

Today was an exciting day for me at the hospital....... here's why.

I have been taking care of a 19 year old who has had 10 days of fever - real fever, as high as 104 degrees. He is from El Salvador and he was detained by the Border Patrol. While in the detainee facility he gets a bad fever. They give tylenol. It comes back. This went on for a few days and then they brought him to our Emergency Department.

He had new symptoms - no cough, rashes, diarrhea, etc, etc.... it was quite a mystery but he had some laboratory values that were consistent with a disease called Typhus, which is very common down here.

We started the treatment for typhus and followed him through the week. He didn't get better. I was contacted by some local government workers and I described the situation. When I mentioned typhus it got mentioned in a report which ended up with someone in Washington, DC. So then I got a call from the regional health director concerned that our pt had some communicable disease similar to the plague...........

Anyway, yesterday our blood cultures confirmed the bacteria, not typhus but typhoid, a salmonella species. This is what causes Typhoid fever. We treated it. He is better. Hopefully no one else will get sick. It was definitely a good way to end the week.

Visit from some friends

One of my good friends from HS came down to visit us two weeks ago. it was really good to see them. Ian Kemp is now going through flight school in Kingsville, TX. This is only 90 miles north of us--really close in Texas miles!! He and his wife, Joelle (whom i got to meet for the first time), came up for the afternoon. It was really nice to see a familiar face down here and know that they are not too far away. we look forward to seeing them again soon. p.s. they are so tan because they just got back from two weeks in Hawaii--i was a little jealous of their tans.
Here is a picture of Isabella and i that Matt took recently. Check out my hair cute--i did the "mom" thing and got it chopped off. i guess you can't tell that well..but know that it hits just at my shoulders when it is curly.

ALSO

This is Matt writing..... I have recently gotten home from a medical education conference in Corpus Christi. CC is the closest city 2 hours away and it is still not much of a city. It was a great experience. ALSO stands for Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics. We reviewed basic skills of labor and delivery as well as some more advanced (how to use forceps, vaccuum, etc).

So far this week I worked 40 hours and then was gone for two days (this means I was at home about 10 hours all week).......... so when I called Katie yesterday I was able to ask her what it would be like being a single mother.

I don't remember exactly how she worded it.... it may have not really been words but the sounds that she made.... nonetheless the communication was clear. Being a single parent would not be easy.

All three babies are here

I don't know if i mentioned this before but all three babies from the residency are here with us. Sarah had Noah on Jan. 11; I had Isabella on Feb. 10 and Megan had Luke about a month later. It is so fun being together during this transition into parenthood with good friends. Here are some pictures of them.

I love watching my parents with Isabella--i don't know what it is..but it is special. my dad got her up every morning for me and the one morning that i got her up he was upset with me. That is one of his times with her and i reuined it. sorry daddy. My mom is always a great help and Isabella loves "talking" with her. My mom and i got to hear Isabellas first REAL laugh--it is really cute...i am always wondering when it will happen again.

Flying with baby

hello all, this is my first blogg in a long time--i am sorry for that. Isabella is taking up a lot of my time as of late. I got to go home to my parents house last week for the last time. My parents are moving to NC--finally!! All they need to do is sell their home in VA and they are off.

the flights were good (thanks to my dear friend, Heather). I love pre-boarding..matt already blogged about that so i won't say more--but it was great!!

We had three flights though and since Isabella doesn't like a passifier--it was a little difficult. But she did great overall..here are some pictures from the flight there and back (with matt).
