Today was the day that I decided that I probably won't deliver a lot of babies in the future, especially if every morning was like this morning. Here is the scene......
Katie and Isabella (and Heather Miller - thanks so much Heather) flew to Virginia today. It was of course our first traveling with Isabella. I will be joining them on Thursday. Things have been really stressful with packing and getting things ready to go.
I woke up at 7 AM and I had a page - my OB pt is in labor 3-4 cm...... so I call to check on her. The on-call doctor reassured me that I could still drop off my family at the airport and help them with their bags. This I did.
As I left the Airport wondering how far along my patient would be when I checked her I got a page. "Dr. Moslener you better hurry, your patient is complete (10 cm) and feels like pushing."
I said, "Janie (nurse) tell her not to push, I will be there right away." So I push the '97 Saturn past the speed limit. Using all 1.9 L of the engine I zoomed towards the hospital which is conveniently 2 miles from the airport. Thankfully, I wasn't on the scooter or the zooming would have been limited to 40 mph.
I ran up the steps to the labor and delivery floor. I checked her, ruptured her bag of water with an amnio hook (looks suspiciously similar to a crocheting needle) and ten minutes later we had a baby.
My heart was pounding, face dripping sweat. We finished up, cleaned up. Thankfully no tearing that needed to be sutured. I congratulated the family and looked at the baby for a while. I left the room to fill out the necessary paperwork. I looked down at my pants. My right leg was dripping wet. My first thought, "Did I just pee my pants?" Feeling my dry crouch I reassured myself that it was not my own urine. The next thought, "Did this come from the Mom or the baby?"
The reply in my head, "At this point it doesn't matter, but you need to go change your pants."
